Argentina's rugby team has always struggled to escape the shadow of its footballers, and today it couldn't escape the shadow of France
FRANCE 23-21 ARGENTINA
A strong second half showing took Argentina to the brink of a comeback win, but a calm drop goal from replacement fly half Camille Lopez snatched back the lead and the win. For the Pumas this was a tenth straight international defeat, but they’ll be confident of ending that streak against Tonga one week from today. When Argentina entered the first Rugby World Cup in 1987 their national football team were reigning world champions. The Pumas had a lot to live up to and sadly finished bottom of their first round group that year.
DID YOU KNOW
At the 2007 World Cup Argentina beat today’s opponents France on their way to the semi final, then beat them again in the third place play-off. That took them to their highest ever world ranking of third. Unfortunately they still found themselves overshadowed by the national football team, which reached the final of the Copa America that year and was ranked number one in the world.
