Northern Exposure: Rugby World Cup Day Thirteen

02nd October 2019

Canada has enjoyed famous wins over most European teams, but against the southern hemisphere giants their shortcomings are cruelly exposed

New Zealand 63 - 0 Canada

New Zealand, which has a total area of 268,021 square kilometres, could fit into Canada thirty six times with room to spare. Unfortunately for the Canucks, today their rugby team fitted snugly into New Zealand’s pocket.

This was hardly a surprise result, as the only team ever to win two consecutive World Cups laid down another marker in their pursuit of the hat trick. The Barrett brothers, Jordie, Scott and Beauden made history today, not only becoming the first trio of brothers to start a match for the All Blacks but each scoring a try.

The Canadians have enjoyed famous victories over Wales, England, Scotland, Italy and France, but the leading southern hemisphere nations continue to thwart them. This was their fourteenth match against New Zealand, Australia or South Africa, and their fourteenth loss. While their lack of quality was exposed again today, fitness and commitment don’t seem to be an issue. And in fairness, Canadians are given plenty of encouragement to get outdoors and be active. When the country celebrated its 150th anniversary of independence in 2017, the government made admission to each of its 48 national parks free of charge for the entire year.

Canada is officially bilingual (English/French) reflecting its colonial past under both countries. Its present and future can be heard on the streets of the larger cities, where Punjabi, Arabic and Chinese are often spoken.
