“I know you're tired, you're close to breaking, but there's strength within you even when you feel weak. I believe in you"
“To that one soul reading this: I know you're tired, you're close to breaking, but there's strength within you even when you feel weak. I believe in you.”
October 10th is World Mental Health Day, and events are taking place throughout Britain aimed at changing attitudes to mental health issues and wiping away the stain of discrimination.
Time to Change have compiled a World Mental Health Day Champions Storybook, detailing the journeys of people from all walks of life who have come to terms with mental health issues and are sharing their experiences for the benefit of others. By telling their stories they help us destigmatize mental health issues and move a step closer to a supportive, non-judgemental society.
There’s a direct link between social isolation and poor mental health, and we all have a part to play in helping others find their place and their voice. Conversis Head of Operations Maria Lopez Garcia is an expert in building bridges across languages and borders, and she appreciates both the commercial and social value of effective communication:
"The ability to communicate is central to wellness. The ability to share our thoughts and feelings and give vent to our frustrations. The ability to reach out to others and “build our village”. Every day my team at Conversis takes responsibility for corporate messages that ensure the success of marketing campaigns, clinical trials and legal cases, and I’m proud that clients trust us with such important tasks. But I can’t think of anything more important than an individual reaching out in search of support and understanding when they need it most. Time to Change shines a light on the progress we’ve made as a society in facing mental health issues and encourages people of character and courage to tell their stories. I’m full of admiration for what they accomplish, not just today but 365 days a year"
We are making progress, and thanks to Time to Change and organisations like them we’ll continue along the right path. Today is a day to applaud those who’ve found a way to cope with mental health issues, sometimes in the face of a lack of understanding and even derision and are now standing up proudly and helping others to do the same. Today is a day to applaud character and courage. It’s a day to say “I believe in you”.
